Introduction

A leading fashion retailer in KwaZulu-Natal is in search of a commercially driven and trend-focused Merchandise Buyer to join their dynamic team. This exciting opportunity is suited to an analytical and strategic individual who thrives in a fast-paced retail environment and has a strong passion for product development, customer behaviour, and driving profitable growth. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and executing category buying strategies, sourcing commercially successful product ranges, and ensuring the right product is available at the right time, price, and quality level to meet customer demand and business objectives.

Description

Key Responsibilities

Product Buying & Range Development

  • Develop and execute seasonal buying strategies aligned to the company’s brand vision, customer profile, and business objectives
  • Build commercially balanced product ranges across multiple categories
  • Identify and interpret local and international fashion trends, market shifts, and customer buying patterns
  • Conduct competitor analysis and store visits to stay ahead of market trends and pricing strategies
  • Collaborate closely with planners to ensure balanced assortment planning and optimal stock levels
  • Source and select products aligned to quality, price, trend relevance, and profitability targets
  • Ensure all product ranges are customer-focused and aligned to the company’s brand positioning

Supplier & Vendor Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local and international suppliers on behalf of the company
  • Negotiate pricing, payment terms, lead times, and margins
  • Manage supplier performance, ensuring quality standards and delivery timelines are met
  • Partner with suppliers on product development and innovation
  • Travel locally and internationally for sourcing, supplier engagement, and trend research

Trading & Commercial Performance

  • Analyse sales performance, stock turn, GP margins, and sell-through
  • Make proactive trading decisions to maximise sales and profitability within the company
  • Monitor weekly and monthly trade reports and implement corrective actions
  • Drive markdown management and identify opportunities to improve product performance
  • Collaborate with Planning, Allocation, Visual Merchandising, Marketing, and Operations teams to ensure strong execution

Trend & Market Analysis

  • Maintain strong awareness of fashion trends, consumer behaviour, and competitor activity
  • Translate trend insights into commercially viable product ranges for the company
  • Use customer insights and data analytics to inform buying decisions
  • Attend trade shows, supplier presentations, and market visits

Stock & Financial Management

  • Work within departmental budgets and financial targets
  • Ensure accurate forecasting and stock management across categories
  • Manage OTB (Open-to-Buy) in collaboration with the planning team
  • Drive profitability while minimising markdown risk and aged stock

Education Profile

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Fashion, Retail Management, Buying, Clothing Management, or related field
  • Minimum 5-8 years’ experience as a Merchandise Buyer within the fashion/retail industry
  • Strong understanding of the South African retail market and consumer trends
  • Proven track record of successfully trading and growing product categories
